You Lied
by Alina Todd

You lied when you said you loved me.
You lied when you said you cared.
You tore my heart to ribbons.
You brought out everything I feared.

You brought out something new in me.
Something no one had seen before.
It had always been there inside of me,
But you were the first I thought cared enough to explore.

There was something in your smile,
That said you were sincere.
It told me you would never hurt me.
It said of you I shouldn't fear.

Something about your eyes,
Deep and thoughtful inside.
They told me I could trust you.
They told me not to hide.

Your words were so vulnerable and caring.
How could anything that sweet possibly be bad?
I opened up my soul to you.
But all it left me was sad.

Your smile had lied to me,
When it said you wouldn't hurt me.
Your eyes had tricked me.
But they were as empty as a hollow tree.

But worst of all were your words.
They told me everything I needed to hear.
When I was with  you I was so secure.
Now with pangs of emptyness runs down my cheek a single tear.

You lied about it all.
I believed what you said about you and I.
I thought our connection was magical,
Your speech so touching it made me cry.

But that was all it was,
A speech rehearsed for desired effect.
Did your lie accomplish what you wanted it to,
To stab my heart direct?
