A Cry to the Sky
It’s black outside,
There’s no stars out there.
Night has fallen now,
There’s no one anywhere.
And I sit in the field,
And I watch the black.
Slowly I stand up,
It seems there’s something I lack.
I turn my head toward the sky,
And throw my arms out.
I stare at nothing and turn hot,
And I lift my voice high.
I yell toward the unknown,
And wish that I could get by.
But nothing will ever leave me,
All I can do is lie.
And after a few moments,
I fall backwards to the ground.
I lay still for a moment,
Then my head begins to pound.
And for the first time since who knows when,
The tears flow from my eyes.
They run down my cheek’s,
And I cry on my back facing the sky.
A silent wish,
Unspoken by me.
For someone to care,
To set me free.
And tear after tear,
And wish after wish.
A small sigh escapes me,
I can hear the wind’s swish.
I lay on my back,
And close my eyes.
I stand up once more,
Turn toward the sky,
Raise my arms above my head,
And I cry.
